Memorial Day is upon us, and with it, the joys of summer.  But as we head off for beaches, vacations and time with those we love, it's important to take along a little souvenir...

Souvenir is a French verb.  "To Remember"

On Memorial Day we are all reminded to remember.  But beyond simply remembering, it is important to honor those who have gone before us.

Perhaps the best way we can remember and honor those who have served protecting our freedoms is to spend our summer taking along a little "souvenir" -- to remember.

I would suggest that we honor others by remembering how and when they have served us.  And whether it's a man or woman in uniform or a neighbor or co-worker, we should take this season as an opportunity to remember their service to us.  Did they offer us some great moment of coaching?  Remember, and let them know that you remember. 

Did they provide moral support when it seemed like you were doing battle with Swift's "confederacy of dunces?" 

Remember them.  Did they exhibit some behavior or perform some service that made you look better in your role? 

Remember them. Not with money or presents, but with acknowledgment and appreciation.  Souvenir.

I recently received an e-mail from a member of this chapter who acknowledged that I had played a role in one of her co-worker's pursuit of the PMP credential.  It was the highlight of my month.  I have not deleted or moved the e-mail from my inbox.  Why?  Because someone remembers.  

It takes so little time to let others know how they have doggedly worked on our behalf.  And yet a single "souvenir" moment can lift someone's spirits and remind them why they work tirelessly on our behalf.

And it gives them the fuel to do it again.  And again.  And again.  

At a time when the temptation is to claim credit for the work of others, let's take the opportunity this time of year presents to take pause and provide someone with a lasting "souvenir."
